Key Functions of this Wear Ring

• Prevents Metal-to-Metal Contact: This is its most critical job. It sits between the piston and the cylinder bore (or the rod and the gland), acting as a sacrificial barrier. Without it, the high-pressure side loads on the cylinder would cause the metal piston to scrape against the cylinder wall, leading to catastrophic scoring and failure of the barrel.

• Absorbs Side Loads: In heavy-duty applications like dozers, hydraulic cylinders are often subjected to massive lateral (transverse) forces. The wear ring distributes these forces over a larger surface area, preventing the piston from "cocking" or tilting inside the cylinder.

• Protects Expensive Seals: When a wear ring wears out and becomes too thin, the piston or rod gains "play." This misalignment forces the hydraulic seals to work at an angle, causing them to deform, extrude, or tear, which leads to the leaks you are likely trying to fix.
