This is a "pilot" filter. In hydraulic heavy machinery, the pilot system uses lower-pressure fluid to operate the main control valves (which in turn operate the heavy functions like the boom, stick, and bucket). Because these pilot valves have very tight tolerances, this filter is critical for catching fine contaminants that could cause the controls to become sticky, jerky, or unresponsive.
